Several devastating floods nearly washed out many of the towns along the Delaware Canal. Enormous flooding was reported in 1903 and again in 1955. More recently, rainy remnants of Hurricane Ivan combined with saturated ground produced heavy flooding in September, 2004. Seven months later, in April of 2005, heavy rain and snow melt contributed to another flood of the Delaware River. Yet another flood occured in June of 2006. Both of these floods yielded more than three feet of water in stores and homes along the river. In fact, some of the towpath has still not been repaired as a result of these floods. Many people were left homeless and many stores had to close their doors. Town residents and government authorities are considering building dams and other anti-flood agents in an effort to prevent these events in the future. Below are pictures from before these recent flooding incidents in comparison with pictures after the floods. By witnessing these effects firsthand, students can gain an appreciation for the power of nature.

At present time, millions of dollars are being invested in the reconstruction of the Delaware Canal Towpath.
